Wildlife Watching: Where & When

Everyone asks "where do we see sloths?" like there's a sloth vending machine. There isn't — there are rescue centers that fund real rehab, beaches that explode with turtles for four months a year, and Tortuguero nights you'll talk about for decades. Here's the by-animal breakdown: where to go, when to go, and how to keep it ethical.

Good to know

  • Rescue center vs wild. Centers (Rescate, Toucan Rescue Ranch, Proyecto Asis, Jaguar Rescue) fund real rehab with your visit — that's the ethical close-up. Wild sightings (Tortuguero, Ostional) are never guaranteed, and that's exactly the point.
  • The ethics line: no touching, no sloth selfies as a business model. Legit centers restrict animal contact (Proyecto Asis) and change which animals are visible daily (Jaguar Rescue). If a place promises you a jaguar on demand, leave.
  • Turtle season is real. Tortuguero's green turtles nest July–October — red light, dark clothes, authorized guide only. Ostional's arribadas run June–December, when thousands of olive ridleys arrive in a single night. Book guides, not hope.
  • Jaguar Rescue vs Sloth Sanctuary: Jaguar Rescue is the better-known all-around rehab visit; for the Sloth Sanctuary, read recent reviews first — some visitors find the enclosures small.
