San José in 2 Days

Most travelers treat San José like an airport with traffic — land, suffer the avenida Segunda, escape. That's a mistake, but only if you do it right: stay central, eat at the Mercado, and let the capital be the calm bookend to your trip instead of the part you skipped.

Good to know

  • San José is a bookend, not a detour. Land, sleep, explore downtown on day one, and roll out on day two — it beats an exhausting arrival-day drive.
  • Stay central. La Sabana or Barrio Otoya put the museums, the theater, and the Mercado within walking distance.
  • First visit? Take a food walking tour at the Mercado Central — a local shows you the sodas and juices so you're not guessing at the counter.
  • Landing late? Don't white-knuckle it to Quepos or La Fortuna that night. The roads are dark, the trucks are many, and San José is fine for one night.
