Chocolate & Coffee Tours

The groups ask it verbatim: chocolate tours are better in La Fortuna, coffee tours better in Monteverde — one in each place? It's honestly good advice, because it matches where each crop actually grows. Here's where to do which, what a good tour really includes, and which ones are worth it with kids.

Good to know

  • The verdict on the La Fortuna/Monteverde split: yes — do chocolate in La Fortuna (North Fields or Don Juan, both hands-on with tastings) and coffee in Monteverde (Café de Monteverde's bean-to-cup tour on a real sustainable farm). The question everyone asks has the right answer.
  • The Caribbean wildcard. The Sticos BriBri tour is the most culturally real chocolate experience on this list — a full 7-hour day with an Indigenous family, home-cooked lunch and a waterfall swim. Plan it as its own day, not a quick stop.
  • Combo vs single-crop. Farm tours like North Fields and Don Juan cover coffee, cacao, and sugarcane in one visit; if you want the deep coffee-nerd experience, go Britt, Doka, or Aquiares (the country's largest coffee farm) instead.
  • Tours run on schedules. Café de Monteverde and several others only run at set times, and sources disagree on some hours — check times in advance rather than winging it.
