All Things Monteverde

The cloud forest: quetzals at dawn, hanging bridges in the mist, and a mountain town with Quaker-dairy roots. Cooler, quieter, and completely different from the beach towns. Everything worth doing up the mountain, in one place.

Good to know

  • Pack for 60°F (15°C). Monteverde is genuinely cool and misty — the fleece you never used at the beach earns its keep here.
  • Mornings are clearest. The cloud rolls in most afternoons; do the forest early, town and museums after lunch.
  • Guides multiply wildlife. The dawn guided walk finds quetzals by ear — self-guided visitors walk right past them.
  • Two reserves, different vibes: Monteverde is the famous one; Santa Elena is wilder and emptier. Do both if you have three days.
