All Things Jacó

People love to dismiss Jacó, and then they base their whole central-Pacific trip here — because it’s the closest beach to San José, and nothing else on this coast has banks, a hospital, restaurants, and expat life all within walking distance. The party reputation is real, but it’s concentrated — and the logistics are unbeatable.

Good to know

  • Convenience is the whole pitch. Jacó is the perennial central-Pacific base for a reason: surf, lessons, and a town that runs like a town. Plan anything logistically — rentals, errands, meeting people — from here.
  • Beginners: surf in Jacó, watch the show at Hermosa. Playa Hermosa is Costa Rica’s “surfing stadium” and a World Surfing Reserve — powerful waves and rip currents with no lifeguards. Not a swimming beach; beginners take lessons in Jacó instead.
  • Two sunset plays. Jaco Viewpoint is five minutes south — the classic Costanera photo stop. El Miro, the graffiti-covered ruins above town, is the wilder one: 30–50 minutes steep uphill, bring water and a flashlight for the descent.
  • About that reputation. Yes, the nightlife scene exists — and it’s also the reason the town has the services everyone’s day trip quietly depends on.
